Map & Directions

The Master of Arts in Kinesiology program focuses on the study of human beings engaged in physical activity. It offers one dynamic degree with three concentrations—sport studies, sport management, and fitness management.

Out of more than 500 alumni, many work as coaches, athletic directors, and fitness and sports professionals for organizations such as the Golden State Warriors and the Oakland Athletics; junior colleges, four-year colleges, and K-12 schools; and at their own nonprofits.

The degree is designed to ensure that graduate students are exposed to both classical and contemporary knowledge related to the field. Like Saint Mary's College, the program consists of:

  • Small seminar-style classes
  • Highly interactive, expert faculty members
  • An interest in the student as a person
  • An emphasis on shared inquiry and critical thinking
  • A respect for new and different ways of learning

The Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology degree is a four-year course of study. We examine the whole person—anatomically, physiologically, biomechanically, psychologically, sociologically, and historically—across the lifespan. Our domains are health, sport, and physical activity. Students select one area within which to study: sport and recreation management, health promotion, or health and human performance.

MA in Kinesiology, with a Concentration in Sport Management - Campus
The Master of Arts in Kinesiology program features three distinct concentrations: Sport Studies, Sport Management, and Fitness Management. Students in each concentration take five (5) core courses that cover the theoretical, administrative, legal, psychological, and investigative bases of the field. Students are then able to personalize the remainder of their curriculum using a wide variety of electives and internship opportunities to ensure their overall education and experiences match their personal and professional goals.

The curriculum is designed to enable students to select the concentration that fits best with their professional goals:

Sport Studies: For those interested in teaching, coaching, and sport administration

Sport Management: For those interested in managing sport organizations primarily within educational settings

Fitness Management: For those wishing to manage fitness and wellness programs in schools and private organizations

If taking courses full-time, requirements may be completed in 14-months (summer start) or 16-months (fall start). If taking courses part-time, these requirements may be completed between 18 and 26 months.

Students meet with the Graduate Program Director in advance of their first term to develop an academic plan that works specifically with their interests and goals, and to establish a specific time to graduation.

BA in Kinesiology, with an Emphasis in Sport Management - Campus

Our primary department focus is to ground our students in the disciplinary knowledge necessary for a meaningful professional and personal life after Saint Mary's College. Our faculty and staff consider and treat each student as an equal in the Department of Kinesiology's community of learners. This is expressed through a curriculum that respects and engages difference and a faculty focused on the whole person we teach. Our undergraduate students have access to the following types of department coursework: sport history and sociology, exercise psychology and physiology, biomechanics and human motor performance, athletic facility management, community and peer health, athletic training, sport law, exercise testing and prescription, and sport nutrition.

Health and Human Performance

This is an individualized course of study constructed to meet the needs of students with varied career and graduate school goals, e.g., sports medicine, exercise physiology, health education, or community health. The interdisciplinary coursework is designed in consultation with a faculty advisor to meet the individual interests of the student.

Health Promotion

This emphasis prepares students with interests in the field of public health, health education and promotion, and wellness. Course work has been designed to meet the four Critical Component Elements for undergraduate health education programs.

Sport and Recreation Management
